GRAVITATIONAL WAVES: Theory and Methods for Detection

Dr. Deyan Mihaylov, Post Doctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute, presented a session covering a variety of topics about gravitational waves, in celebration of five years since their detection.

LECTURE

Some of the topics covered by Dr. Mihaylov included the derivation of gravitational waves as a linear effect in Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, the action of gravitational waves on test masses, how these waves are generated by binary astrophysical systems, and the significance of the quadrupole formula.
