Phoenix Space LaunchPad Challenge Terms and Conditions

The Phoenix Space LaunchPad Challenge (“LaunchPad Challenge”) is operated and promoted by Phoenix Space Education Limited (“Phoenix Space”), a company registered in England at 5 Calico Row, Plantation Wharf, London, United Kingdom, SW11 3YH (registered number 12340748). By entering the LaunchPad Challenge you agree to the terms and conditions described below (“Terms and Conditions”).

The LaunchPad Challenge

  • The Phoenix Space LaunchPad Challenge is an academic competition which offers upper high/secondary school and lower-level undergraduate university students the opportunity to develop and present a creative, idea-based solution to a space science-themed problem. Students can apply their knowledge and research skills to solving scientific challenges, leverage creativity, develop presentation and teamwork skills while connecting to and competing against a global community of like-minded students who have an interest in space science.
  • Working in teams of up to three, students will identify and define a problem statement from one of three topic areas and develop a logic-driven, researched solution to the chosen problem. Individuals may also enter the competition on their own.
  • There are three rounds to the competition
    • Round 1: Each team submits their initial written entry and a brief video for review.
    • Round 2: Semi-finalists chosen by the judging panel will revise and create a more in-depth presentation.
    • Round 3: 5 finalists present their solution live via webinar to the judging panel during World Space Week (October 4-5)

The prize

A Grand Prize is awarded to the overall winner, and each of the other finalists will also receive prizes. For more on the prizes please see the Judging and Prizes section as well as the LaunchPad Challenge website, which contains the most up-to-date information on the Prizes.

  • Each team must register for the competition. A team may submit their written and video entry when they register or after they register. There is no requirement to submit the entry when registering.

  • One member of the team, the Team Leader, will register the team using the form located on the above webpage. Information about the team, team members, the team mentor (if applicable), and additional information will be collected using the registration form.

Judging and Prizes

  • Entries will be judged by a panel of international academics and scientists based on the following criteria:
    • Problem identification
    • The originality of the solution
    • Comprehensiveness of research

    • Critical evaluation of the solution
    • Effectiveness of communication

We will strive to select up to 20 semi-finalists, though this number may be reduced dependent upon the number of total entries submitted, and the quality of the entries received. The work of the semi-finalists and finalists will be reviewed and scored by the judging panel.
  • The decision of the judging panel is final, and at its sole discretion. The Applicant has no right to explanation or discussion with Phoenix Space or the judges as to the outcome of the LaunchPad Challenge.

  • Phoenix Space may ask you to provide documentary proof of your identity and/or address before awarding the prize. The use of a false name or address may disqualify you from receiving any prize. Disqualification will be decided at the sole discretion of Phoenix Space.
  • A Grand Prize is awarded to the overall winner, and each of the other finalists will also receive prizes.
  • There is no alternative prize or cash alternative and prizes cannot be transferred to any other person. Phoenix Space may alter arrangements or prizes at any point before or during the LaunchPad Challenge should this be deemed necessary by Phoenix Space.
  • Any tax or income related considerations related to receiving any prize(s) are the sole responsibility of the winners, as are any other governmental rules or regulations related to receiving prizes.
  • Phoenix Space shall not be involved in how any Prize is allocated among Team Members.
