Phoenix Space to lead a panel discussion at Youth SDG Summit on 23 September

Phoenix Space is honored to have been chosen to host a panel discussion at the Youth SDG Summit on Thursday, 23 September. The session topic is “How space science can help to achieve the SDGs” and runs from 2pm to 3pm London time.

The Youth SDG Summit is a 3-day virtual convention for youth and stakeholders working toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and features sessions in a variety of areas.

Our session will:

  • Raise awareness and address the global decrease of interest in science and STEM contrasted with the growing demand in STEM fields and urgent need for scientific and technological literacy among youth.
  • Present alternative approaches to address the challenges of STEM education using the inspirational nature of space and space science.
  • Present case studies of successful projects using space science to address the Sustainable Development Goals.

Our panelists include:

  • Dr. Ugur Guven, Senior Professor of Aerospace Engineering, Advisory Council Member of United Nations CSSTEAP. Prof. Dr. Ugur Guven is an Aerospace Engineer (PhD, BSc) and a Nuclear Engineer (MSc). He is currently working as a senior professor of Aerospace Engineering and conducting research related to interstellar travel and utilization of nuclear energy for space missions and habitats. On the international front he is serving as an Advisory Council member at the United Nations Center for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia-Pacific Region (UN CSSTEAP) and he is also a member of the Academic Council on United Nations Systems and Member of the European Association for International Education (EAIE). He is also currently a member of NAFSA as an educator and he is the honorary Executive Coordinator of the Indo-French Academic Alliance. Dr. Guven has 25+ years of work experience and over 250+ academic publications in journal papers, conference proceedings, project reports, and books.
  • Jillian Gloria, Aerospace Engineer, Space Science Advocate. Jillian is an advocate for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and space exploration, all while making the bold decision to act as an inspirational force in her community through both local endeavors with the Barnes & Noble, Nasa Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex, Women In Defense, Orange County Public Schools, and The Central Florida Stem Education Council; as well as through global platforms via partnerships with Linkedin, Fox’s Xploration Outerspace Tv Show, And The Discovery Channel Canada. She strongly believes that by sharing her own love and excitement for space, she can inspire others to dream big.
  • Berenika Rozanska, COO at Phoenix Space, Social Entrepreneur & Activist. Berenika has 15+ years of international experience in the social impact space that includes strategic planning, designing and delivering projects, and establishing and strengthening operational and administrative structures. She has successfully launched social enterprises, developed content, and rapidly scaled projects to improve the lives of the most vulnerable. She holds an MA in Cultural Studies (Individual Humanistic Studies) from the University of Wroclaw, Poland. She has also successfully developed Phoenix Space, a social start-up focusing on space science education, in the midst of the COVID pandemic.
  • Wahid A. Kamalian (panel moderator). Wahid is an investment and strategic advisor with deal experience covering multi-billion dollar and mid-market debt and equity deals for global investors including Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), Mubadala, Temasek, GIC and Khazanah Nasional, among others spanning. Currently, he is leveraging his investment advisory and management experience to support and apply investment discipline and rigour to donor fundraising efforts and strategic initiatives of development agencies, religious institutions, NGOs and charities to create social impact.

What are the SDGs?

In 2015, the United Nations gathered to create a list of the 17 priorities they wanted to achieve by the year 2030. They called them the Sustainable Development Goals, and they serve as a universal call to action to mobilize young people, governments, international organizations, NGOs, companies, and stakeholders to take action to put an end to poverty, inequalities, injustice, and climate change by the year 2030.
