Students learn coding in a 60 hour hybrid course powered by Codecademy’s learning environment, with practical exercises developed by Phoenix Space. In each coding lesson, the user completes technical problems to accomplish their own simulated space mission. At the end of the course, students write a larger program using all the skills they learned. Python was chosen for its simple syntax, wide support, and application. Codecademy, a leading online educational platform, issues a certificate of completion to students upon their successful completion of the course.
This intense program is targeted at 17- 24 year old students from refugee and disadvantaged communities. This program is offered for free to students.

Computer programming is a critical skill to learn in the 21st century, and not only if you plan on pursuing a career as a programmer. Having an understanding of computers will help you to understand the importance of technology, and the work that others do with it. Computer programming improves critical thinking and problem solving skills, understanding of mathematics and project planning.
Python is a general-purpose, versatile, and popular programming language. It’s great as a first language because it is concise and easy to read, and it is also a good language to have in any programmer’s stack as it can be used in numerous fields from science, business, software development, apps, and designing websites.
Our course combines rigorous foundational training, powered by Codecademy, with interesting, original and realistic programming problems written by Phoenix Space. Students will apply their knowledge after each taught section to solve a variety of problems which will build their skills, incorporating new material with old. They will finish our course with a series of short programs which will demonstrate these skills and are ideally suited to building a portfolio from.
Some of the Python topics covered will include: Python Syntax, Strings and Console Output, Conditionals and Control Flow, Functions, Loops, Lists and Functions, and Statistics.
